Why I Skip University path in Singapore

Lets begin with my own personal path from primary school all the way to me now at the age of 25.

  1. Go through 6 years of primary education at Everygreen Primary School, graduated on year 2006.

  2. Move on to 4 years of Secondary education at Riverside Secondary School, graduated on year 2010.

  3. Went to Ngee Ann Polytechnic for 3 years, graduated on year 2014 with a Aerospace Technology Diploma. Terrible results means the certificate is practically useless and i owed my parents a total of $7.7k study debt for paying 3 years of school fees.

  4. After graduating from polytechnic, it took a long 1.5 years before i enlisted. I took this time to work in various part time jobs to build up my communication skills and expand my skillsets. I also defer my $7.7k student loan debt to after NS.

  5. After 2 years of NS, I'm already 23 years old. I saved up and paid off my polytechnic student loan of $8k including interest into my parents' CPF. I decided not to attend University, be it part time or full time. I make this decision because i really don't like to study what i don't like and most of the courses offered at local university had no interest to me. In addition, if i had taken University path, i would have graduated at the age of 28 (full time study) with estimated student debt of 5-figure or 29 (part time study) with estimated no debt if day time job is able to pay off fast.

  6. My point is although financially it is difficult for me to go through the whole traditional education and career path but i did my own estimate calculations that if i start work right after National Service, i reckon i will be richer at the age of 28/29 than going through University. Adding on, i do not need my family members worry about my financial situation or burden them with my financial issues. I am now 25 years old, working in government sector, earning a decent paycheck even though my diploma is irrelevant but make up with my years of working experience during my student days and able to pursue my passion in music too.

  7. To end off, some things in life we have to think logically whether it make sense to go ahead with the advice other people give. In the end, if you take the advice or risks, you have to be prepared what you are facing. Have a nice day everyone!
